checkpatch: add warning for pr_* and dev_* macros without a trailing newline
Add a new check in scripts/checkpatch.pl to detect usage of pr_(level) and
dev_(level) macros (for both C and Rust) when the string literal does not
end with '\n'. Missing trailing newlines can lead to incomplete log lines
that do not appear properly in dmesg or in console output. To show an
example of this working after applying the patch we can run the script on
the commit that likely motivated this need/issue:
Also, the patch is able to handle correctly if there is a printing call
without a newline which then has a newline printed via pr_cont for both
Rust and C alike. If there is no newline printed and the patch ends or
there is another pr_* call before a newline with pr_cont is printed it
will show a warning. Not implemented for dev_cont because it is not clear
to me if that is used at all.
One false warning that will be generated due to this change is in case we
have a patch that modifies a `pr_* call without a newline` which has a
pr_cont with a newline following it. In this case there will be a warning
but because the patch does not include the following pr_cont it will warn
there is nothing creating a newline. I have modified the warning to be
softer due to this known problem.
I have tested with comments, whitespace, differen orders of pr_* calls and
pr_cont and the only case that I suspect to be a problem is the one
outlined above.

ucount: use rcuref_t for reference counting
Use rcuref_t for reference counting. This eliminates the cmpxchg loop in
the get and put path. This also eliminates the need to acquire the lock
in the put path because once the final user returns the reference, it can
no longer be obtained anymore.

ucount: use RCU for ucounts lookups
The ucounts element is looked up under ucounts_lock. This can be
optimized by using RCU for a lockless lookup and return and element if the
reference can be obtained.
Replace hlist_head with hlist_nulls_head which is RCU compatible. Let
find_ucounts() search for the required item within a RCU section and
return the item if a reference could be obtained. This means
alloc_ucounts() will always return an element (unless the memory
allocation failed). Let put_ucounts() RCU free the element if the
reference counter dropped to zero.

ucount: replace get_ucounts_or_wrap() with atomic_inc_not_zero()
get_ucounts_or_wrap() increments the counter and if the counter is
negative then it decrements it again in order to reset the previous
increment. This statement can be replaced with atomic_inc_not_zero() to
only increment the counter if it is not yet 0.
This simplifies the get function because the put (if the get failed) can
be removed. atomic_inc_not_zero() is implement as a cmpxchg() loop which
can be repeated several times if another get/put is performed in parallel.
This will be optimized later.
Increment the reference counter only if not yet dropped to zero.

rcu: provide a static initializer for hlist_nulls_head
Patch series "ucount: Simplify refcounting with rcuref_t".
I noticed that the atomic_dec_and_lock_irqsave() in put_ucounts() loops
sometimes even during boot. Something like 2-3 iterations but still.
This series replaces the refcounting with rcuref_t and adds a RCU lookup.
This allows a lockless lookup in alloc_ucounts() if the entry is available
and a cmpxchg()less put of the item.
This patch (of 4):
Provide a static initializer for hlist_nulls_head so that it can be used
in statically defined data structures.

lib/zlib: drop EQUAL macro
The macro is prehistoric, and only exists to help those readers who don't
know what memcmp() returns if memory areas differ. This is pretty well
documented, so the macro looks excessive.
Now that the only user of the macro depends on DEBUG_ZLIB config, GCC
warns about unused macro if the library is built with W=2 against
defconfig. So drop it for good.

get_maintainer: add --substatus for reporting subsystem status

The subsystem status (S: field) can inform a patch submitter if the
subsystem is well maintained or e.g. maintainers are missing. In
get_maintainer, it is currently reported with --role(stats) by adjusting
the maintainer role for any status different from Maintained. This has
two downsides:
- if a subsystem has only reviewers or mailing lists and no maintainers,
the status is not reported. For example Orphan subsystems typically
have no maintainers so there's nobody to report as orphan minder.
- the Supported status means that someone is paid for maintaining, but
it is reported as "supporter" for all the maintainers, which can be
incorrect (only some of them may be paid). People (including myself)
have been also confused about what "supporter" means.
The second point has been brought up in 2022 and the discussion in the end
resulted in adjusting documentation only [1]. I however agree with Ted's
points that it's misleading to take the subsystem status and apply it to
all maintainers [2].
The attempt to modify get_maintainer output was retracted after Joe
objected that the status becomes not reported at all [3]. This series
addresses that concern by reporting the status (unless it's the most
common Maintained one) on separate lines that follow the reported emails,
using a new --substatus parameter. Care is taken to reduce the noise to
minimum by not reporting the most common Maintained status, by default
require no opt-in that would need the users to discover the new parameter,
and at the same time not to break existing git --cc-cmd usage.
The subsystem status is currently reported with --role(stats) by adjusting
the maintainer role for any status different from Maintained. This has
two downsides:
- if a subsystem has only reviewers or mailing lists and no maintainers,
the status is not reported (i.e. typically, Orphan subsystems have no
maintainers)
- the Supported status means that someone is paid for maintaining, but

Commit 0ab97169aa05 ("crash_core: add generic function to do reservation")
added a generic function to reserve crashkernel memory. So let's use the
same function on powerpc and remove the architecture-specific code that
essentially does the same thing.
The generic crashkernel reservation also provides a way to split the
crashkernel reservation into high and low memory reservations, which can
be enabled for powerpc in the future.
Along with moving to the generic crashkernel reservation, the code related
to finding the base address for the crashkernel has been separated into
its own function name get_crash_base() for better readability and
maintainability.

powerpc: insert System RAM resource to prevent crashkernel conflict
The next patch in the series with title "powerpc/crash: use generic
crashkernel reservation" enables powerpc to use generic crashkernel
reservation instead of custom implementation. This leads to exporting of
`Crash Kernel` memory to iomem_resource (/proc/iomem) via
insert_crashkernel_resources():kernel/crash_reserve.c or at another place
in the same file if HAVE_ARCH_ADD_CRASH_RES_TO_IOMEM_EARLY is set.
The add_system_ram_resources():arch/powerpc/mm/mem.c adds `System RAM` to
iomem_resource using request_resource(). This creates a conflict with
`Crash Kernel`, which is added by the generic crashkernel reservation
code. As a result, the kernel ultimately fails to add `System RAM` to
iomem_resource. Consequently, it does not appear in /proc/iomem.
There are multiple approches tried to avoid this:
1. Don't add Crash Kernel to iomem_resource:
- This has two issues.
First, it requires adding an architecture-specific hook in the
generic code. There are already two code paths to choose when to
add `Crash Kernel` to iomem_resource. This adds one more code path
to skip it.
Second, what if `Crash Kernel` is required in /proc/iomem in the
future? Many architectures do export it.
2. Don't add `System RAM` to iomem_resource by reverting commit c40dd2f766440 ("powerpc: Add System RAM to /proc/iomem"):
- It's not ideal to export `System RAM` via /proc/iomem, but since
it already done ealier and userspace tools like kdump and
kdump-utils rely on `System RAM` from /proc/iomem, removing it
will break userspace.
3. Add Crash Kernel along with System RAM to /proc/iomem:
This patch takes the third approach by updating add_system_ram_resources()
to use insert_resource() instead of the request_resource() API to add the
`System RAM` resource to iomem_resource. insert_resource() allows
inserting resources even if they overlap with existing ones. Since `Crash
Kernel` and `System RAM` resources are added to iomem_resource early in
the boot, any other conflict is not expected.
With the changes introduced here and in the next patch, "powerpc/crash:
use generic crashkernel reservation," /proc/iomem now exports `System RAM`
and `Crash Kernel` as shown below:
Commit 59d58189f3d9 ("crash: fix crash memory reserve exceed system memory
bug") fails crashkernel parsing if the crash size is found to be higher
than system RAM, which makes the memory_limit adjustment code ineffective
due to an early exit from reserve_crashkernel().
Regardless lets not violate the user-specified memory limit by adjusting
it. Remove this adjustment to ensure all reservations stay within the
limit. Commit f94f5ac07983 ("powerpc/fadump: Don't update the
user-specified memory limit") did the same for fadump.

On PowerPC, the memory reserved for the crashkernel can contain components
like RTAS, TCE, OPAL, etc., which should be avoided when loading kexec
segments into crashkernel memory. Due to these special components,
PowerPC has its own set of APIs to locate holes in the crashkernel memory
for loading kexec segments for kdump. However, for loading kexec segments
in the kexec case, PowerPC already uses generic APIs to locate holes.
The previous patch in this series, titled "crash: Let arch decide usable
memory range in reserved area," introduced arch-specific hook to handle
such special regions in the crashkernel area. So, switch PowerPC to use
the generic APIs to locate memory holes for kdump and remove the redundant
PowerPC-specific APIs.

Although the crashkernel area is reserved, on architectures like PowerPC,
it is possible for the crashkernel reserved area to contain components
like RTAS, TCE, OPAL, etc. To avoid placing kexec segments over these
components, PowerPC has its own set of APIs to locate holes in the
crashkernel reserved area.
Add an arch hook in the generic locate mem hole APIs so that architectures
can handle such special regions in the crashkernel area while locating
memory holes for kexec segments using generic APIs. With this, a lot of
redundant arch-specific code can be removed, as it performs the exact same
job as the generic APIs.
To keep the generic and arch-specific changes separate, the changes
related to moving PowerPC to use the generic APIs and the removal of
PowerPC-specific APIs for memory hole allocation are done in a subsequent
patch titled "powerpc/crash: Use generic APIs to locate memory hole for
kdump.

This patch (of 7):
kexec_elf_load() loads an ELF executable and sets the address of the
lowest PT_LOAD section to the address held by the lowest_load_addr
function argument.
To determine the lowest PT_LOAD address, a local variable lowest_addr
(type unsigned long) is initialized to UINT_MAX. After loading each
PT_LOAD, its address is compared to lowest_addr. If a loaded PT_LOAD
address is lower, lowest_addr is updated. However, setting lowest_addr to
UINT_MAX won't work when the kernel image is loaded above 4G, as the
returned lowest PT_LOAD address would be invalid. This is resolved by
initializing lowest_addr to ULONG_MAX instead.
This issue was discovered while implementing crashkernel high/low
reservation on the PowerPC architecture.

lib/plist.c: add shortcut for plist_requeue()
In the operation of plist_requeue(), "node" is deleted from the list
before queueing it back to the list again, which involves looping to find
the tail of same-prio entries.
If "node" is the head of same-prio entries which means its prio_list is on
the priority list, then "node_next" can be retrieve immediately by the
next entry of prio_list, instead of looping nodes on node_list.
The shortcut implementation can benefit plist_requeue() running the below
test, and the test result is shown in the following table.
One can observe from the test result that when the number of nodes of
same-prio entries is smaller, then the probability of hitting the shortcut
can be bigger, thus the benefit can be more significant.
While it tends to behave almost the same for long same-prio entries, since
the probability of taking the shortcut is much smaller.
The test is done on x86_64 architecture with v6.9 kernel and
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz.

scripts: add script to extract built-in firmware blobs
There is currently no tool to extract a firmware blob that is built-in
on vmlinux to the best of my knowledge. So if we have a kernel image
containing the blobs, and we want to rebuild the kernel with some debug
patches for example (and given that the image also has IKCONFIG=y), we
currently can't do that for the same versions for all the firmware
blobs, _unless_ we have exact commits of linux-firmware for the
specific versions for each firmware included.
Through the options CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE{_DIR} one is able to build a
kernel including firmware blobs in a built-in fashion. This is usually
the case of built-in drivers that require some blobs in order to work
properly, for example, like in non-initrd based systems.
Add hereby a script to extract these blobs from a non-stripped vmlinux,
similar to the idea of "extract-ikconfig". The firmware loader interface
saves such built-in blobs as rodata entries, having a field for the FW
name as "_fw_<module_name>_<firmware_name>_bin"; the tool extracts files
named "<module_name>_<firmware_name>" for each rodata firmware entry
detected. It makes use of awk, bash, dd and readelf, pretty standard
tooling for Linux development.
With this tool, we can blindly extract the FWs and easily re-add them
in the new debug kernel build, allowing a more deterministic testing
without the burden of "hunting down" the proper version of each
firmware binary.

MAINTAINERS: add Yang Yang as a co-maintainer of PER-TASK DELAY ACCOUNTING
Balbir Singh is the unique maintainer of PER-TASK DELAY ACCOUNTING, and he
had started work on cgroupstats a long time back, this subsystem then is
not growing at a very rapid pace. With their excellent work delay
accounting is still very useful for observing and optimizing system delay,
but still needs continuous improvement. Yang Yang with his team had
worked for most of the recent patches of the subsystem, and he has a
strong willing to help, Balbir Singh is glad to see that, so add him as a
co-maintainer.

mm,procfs: allow read-only remote mm access under CAP_PERFMON
It's very common for various tracing and profiling toolis to need to
access /proc/PID/maps contents for stack symbolization needs to learn
which shared libraries are mapped in memory, at which file offset, etc.
Currently, access to /proc/PID/maps requires CAP_SYS_PTRACE (unless we are
looking at data for our own process, which is a trivial case not too
relevant for profilers use cases).
Unfortunately, CAP_SYS_PTRACE implies way more than just ability to
discover memory layout of another process: it allows to fully control
arbitrary other processes. This is problematic from security POV for
applications that only need read-only /proc/PID/maps (and other similar
read-only data) access, and in large production settings CAP_SYS_PTRACE is
frowned upon even for the system-wide profilers.
On the other hand, it's already possible to access similar kind of
information (and more) with just CAP_PERFMON capability. E.g., setting up
PERF_RECORD_MMAP collection through perf_event_open() would give one
similar information to what /proc/PID/maps provides.
CAP_PERFMON, together with CAP_BPF, is already a very common combination
for system-wide profiling and observability application. As such, it's
reasonable and convenient to be able to access /proc/PID/maps with
CAP_PERFMON capabilities instead of CAP_SYS_PTRACE.
For procfs, these permissions are checked through common mm_access()
helper, and so we augment that with cap_perfmon() check *only* if
requested mode is PTRACE_MODE_READ. I.e., PTRACE_MODE_ATTACH wouldn't be
permitted by CAP_PERFMON. So /proc/PID/mem, which uses
PTRACE_MODE_ATTACH, won't be permitted by CAP_PERFMON, but /proc/PID/maps,
/proc/PID/environ, and a bunch of other read-only contents will be
allowable under CAP_PERFMON.
Besides procfs itself, mm_access() is used by process_madvise() and
process_vm_{readv,writev}() syscalls. The former one uses
PTRACE_MODE_READ to avoid leaking ASLR metadata, and as such CAP_PERFMON
seems like a meaningful allowable capability as well.
process_vm_{readv,writev} currently assume PTRACE_MODE_ATTACH level of
permissions (though for readv PTRACE_MODE_READ seems more reasonable, but
that's outside the scope of this change), and as such won't be affected by
this patch.
As has_unmovable_pages() call folio_hstate() without hugetlb_lock, there
is a race to free the HugeTLB page between PageHuge() and folio_hstate().
There is no need to add hugetlb_lock here as the HugeTLB page can be freed
in lot of places. So it's enough to unfold folio_hstate() and add a check
to avoid NULL pointer dereference for hugepage_migration_supported().

mm/hugetlb_vmemmap: fix memory loads ordering
Using x86_64 as an example, for a 32KB struct page[] area describing a 2MB
hugeTLB, HVO reduces the area to 4KB by the following steps:
1. Split the (r/w vmemmap) PMD mapping the area into 512 (r/w) PTEs;
2. For the 8 PTEs mapping the area, remap PTE 1-7 to the page mapped
by PTE 0, and at the same time change the permission from r/w to
r/o;
3. Free the pages PTE 1-7 used to map, hence the reduction from 32KB
to 4KB.
However, the following race can happen due to improperly memory loads
ordering:
CPU 1 (HVO) CPU 2 (speculative PFN walker)
atomic_add_unless(&page->_refcount)
XXX: try to modify r/o struct page[]
Specifically, page_is_fake_head() must be ordered after page_ref_count()
on CPU 2 so that it can only return true for this case, to avoid the later
attempt to modify r/o struct page[].
This patch adds the missing memory barrier and makes the tests on
page_is_fake_head() and page_ref_count() done in the proper order.

mm/contig_alloc: fix alloc_contig_range when __GFP_COMP and order < MAX_ORDER
When calling alloc_contig_range() with __GFP_COMP and the order of
requested pfn range is pageblock_order, less than MAX_ORDER, I triggered
WARNING as follows:
alloc_contig_range() marks pageblocks of the requested pfn range to be
isolated, migrate these pages if they are in use and will be freed to
MIGRATE_ISOLATED freelist.
Suppose two alloc_contig_range() calls at the same time and the requested
pfn range are [0x80280000, 0x80280200) and [0x80280200, 0x80280400)
respectively. Suppose the two memory range are in use, then
alloc_contig_range() will migrate and free these pages to MIGRATE_ISOLATED
freelist. __free_one_page() will merge MIGRATE_ISOLATE buddy to larger
buddy, resulting in a MAX_ORDER buddy. Finally, find_large_buddy() in
alloc_contig_range() returns a MAX_ORDER buddy and results in WARNING.
To fix it, call free_contig_range() to free the excess pfn range.

mm/userfaultfd: fix release hang over concurrent GUP
This patch should fix a possible userfaultfd release() hang during
concurrent GUP.
This problem was initially reported by Dimitris Siakavaras in July 2023
[1] in a firecracker use case. Firecracker has a separate process
handling page faults remotely, and when the process releases the
userfaultfd it can race with a concurrent GUP from KVM trying to fault in
a guest page during the secondary MMU page fault process.
A similar problem was reported recently again by Jinjiang Tu in March 2025
[2], even though the race happened this time with a mlockall() operation,
which does GUP in a similar fashion.
In 2017, commit 656710a60e36 ("userfaultfd: non-cooperative: closing the
uffd without triggering SIGBUS") was trying to fix this issue. AFAIU,
that fixes well the fault paths but may not work yet for GUP. In GUP, the
issue is NOPAGE will be almost treated the same as "page fault resolved"
in faultin_page(), then the GUP will follow page again, seeing page
missing, and it'll keep going into a live lock situation as reported.
This change makes core mm return RETRY instead of NOPAGE for both the GUP
and fault paths, proactively releasing the mmap read lock. This should
guarantee the other release thread make progress on taking the write lock
and avoid the live lock even for GUP.
When at it, rearrange the comments to make sure it's uptodate.

mm/page_alloc: fix memory accept before watermarks gets initialized
Watermarks are initialized during the postcore initcall. Until then, all
watermarks are set to zero. This causes cond_accept_memory() to
incorrectly skip memory acceptance because a watermark of 0 is always met.
This can lead to a premature OOM on boot.
To ensure progress, accept one MAX_ORDER page if the watermark is zero.

mm: decline to manipulate the refcount on a slab page
Slab pages now have a refcount of 0, so nobody should be trying to
manipulate the refcount on them. Doing so has little effect; the object
could be freed and reallocated to a different purpose, although the slab
itself would not be until the refcount was put making it behave rather
like TYPESAFE_BY_RCU.
Unfortunately, __iov_iter_get_pages_alloc() does take a refcount. Fix
that to not change the refcount, and make put_page() silently not change
the refcount. get_page() warns so that we can fix any other callers that
need to be changed.
Long-term, networking needs to stop taking a refcount on the pages that it
uses and rely on the caller to hold whatever references are necessary to
make the memory stable. In the medium term, more page types are going to
hav a zero refcount, so we'll want to move get_page() and put_page() out
of line.

memcg: drain obj stock on cpu hotplug teardown
Currently on cpu hotplug teardown, only memcg stock is drained but we
need to drain the obj stock as well otherwise we will miss the stats
accumulated on the target cpu as well as the nr_bytes cached. The stats
include MEMCG_KMEM, NR_SLAB_RECLAIMABLE_B & NR_SLAB_UNRECLAIMABLE_B. In
addition we are leaking reference to struct obj_cgroup object.

mm/huge_memory: drop beyond-EOF folios with the right number of refs
When an after-split folio is large and needs to be dropped due to EOF,
folio_put_refs(folio, folio_nr_pages(folio)) should be used to drop all
page cache refs. Otherwise, the folio will not be freed, causing memory
leak.
This leak would happen on a filesystem with blocksize > page_size and a
truncate is performed, where the blocksize makes folios split to >0 order
ones, causing truncated folios not being freed.

We noticed that uffd-stress test was always failing to run when invoked
for the hugetlb profiles on x86_64 systems with a processor count of 64 or
bigger:
The problem boils down to how run_vmtests.sh (mis)calculates the size of
the region it feeds to uffd-stress. The latter expects to see an amount
of MiB while the former is just giving out the number of free hugepages
halved down. This measurement discrepancy ends up violating uffd-stress'
assertion on number of hugetlb pages allocated per CPU, causing it to bail
out with the error above.
This commit fixes that issue by adjusting run_vmtests.sh's
half_ufd_size_MB calculation so it properly renders the region size in
MiB, as expected, while maintaining all of its original constraints in
place.

When doing buffered writes with FGP_NOWAIT, under memory pressure, the
system returned ENOMEM despite there being plenty of available memory, to
be reclaimed from page cache. The user space used io_uring interface,
which in turn submits I/O with FGP_NOWAIT (the fast path).
This is likely a regression caused by 66dabbb65d67 ("mm: return an ERR_PTR
from __filemap_get_folio"), which moved error handling from
io_map_get_folio() to __filemap_get_folio(), but broke FGP_NOWAIT
handling, so ENOMEM is being escaped to user space. Had it correctly
returned -EAGAIN with NOWAIT, either io_uring or user space itself would
be able to retry the request.
It's not enough to patch io_uring since the iomap interface is the one
responsible for it, and pwritev2(RWF_NOWAIT) and AIO interfaces must
return the proper error too.
The patch was tested with scylladb test suite (its original reproducer),
and the tests all pass now when memory is pressured.

mm: memcontrol: fix swap counter leak from offline cgroup
Commit 6769183166b3 removed the parameter of id from swap_cgroup_record()
and get the memcg id from mem_cgroup_id(folio_memcg(folio)). However, the
caller of it may update a different memcg's counter instead of
folio_memcg(folio).
E.g. in the caller of mem_cgroup_swapout(), @swap_memcg could be
different with @memcg and update the counter of @swap_memcg, but
swap_cgroup_record() records the wrong memcg's ID. When it is uncharged
from __mem_cgroup_uncharge_swap(), the swap counter will leak since the
wrong recorded ID.
Fix it by bringing the parameter of id back.

mm/vma: do not register private-anon mappings with khugepaged during mmap
We already are registering private-anon VMAs with khugepaged during fault
time, in do_huge_pmd_anonymous_page(). Commit "register suitable readonly
file vmas for khugepaged" moved the khugepaged registration logic from
shmem_mmap to the generic mmap path.
The userspace-visible effect should be this: khugepaged will unnecessarily
scan mm's which haven't yet faulted in. Note that it won't actually
collapse because all PTEs are none.
Now that I think about it, the mm is going to have a file VMA anyways
during fork+exec, so the mm already gets registered during mmap due to the
non-anon case (I *think*), so at least one of either the mmap registration
or fault-time registration is redundant.
Make this logic specific for non-anon mappings.

squashfs: fix invalid pointer dereference in squashfs_cache_delete
When mounting a squashfs fails, squashfs_cache_init() may return an error
pointer (e.g., -ENOMEM) instead of NULL. However, squashfs_cache_delete()
only checks for a NULL cache, and attempts to dereference the invalid
pointer. This leads to a kernel crash (BUG: unable to handle kernel
paging request in squashfs_cache_delete).
This patch fixes the issue by checking IS_ERR(cache) before accessing it.

mm/migrate: fix shmem xarray update during migration
A shmem folio can be either in page cache or in swap cache, but not at the
same time. Namely, once it is in swap cache, folio->mapping should be
NULL, and the folio is no longer in a shmem mapping.
In __folio_migrate_mapping(), to determine the number of xarray entries to
update, folio_test_swapbacked() is used, but that conflates shmem in page
cache case and shmem in swap cache case. It leads to xarray multi-index
entry corruption, since it turns a sibling entry to a normal entry during
xas_store() (see [1] for a userspace reproduction). Fix it by only using
folio_test_swapcache() to determine whether xarray is storing swap cache
entries or not to choose the right number of xarray entries to update.
Note:
In __split_huge_page(), folio_test_anon() && folio_test_swapcache() is
used to get swap_cache address space, but that ignores the shmem folio in
swap cache case. It could lead to NULL pointer dereferencing when a
in-swap-cache shmem folio is split at __xa_store(), since
!folio_test_anon() is true and folio->mapping is NULL. But fortunately,
its caller split_huge_page_to_list_to_order() bails out early with EBUSY
when folio->mapping is NULL. So no need to take care of it here.

mm/hugetlb: fix surplus pages in dissolve_free_huge_page()
In dissolve_free_huge_page(), free huge pages are dissolved without
adjusting surplus count. However, free huge pages may be accounted as
surplus pages, and will lead to wrong surplus count.
I reproduce this issue on qemu. The steps are:
1) Node1 is memory-less at first. Hot-add memory to node1 by executing
the two commands in qemu monitor:
object_add memory-backend-ram,id=mem1,size=1G
device_add pc-dimm,id=dimm1,memdev=mem1,node=1
2) online one memory block of Node1 with:
echo online_movable > /sys/devices/system/node/node1/memoryX/state
3) create 64 huge pages for node1
4) run a program to reserve (don't consume) all the huge pages
5) echo 0 > nr_huge_pages for node1. After this step, free huge pages in
Node1 are surplus.
6) create 80 huge pages for node0
7) offline memory of node1, The memory range to offline contains the free
surplus huge pages created in step3) ~ step5)
echo offline > /sys/devices/system/node/node1/memoryX/state
8) kill the program in step 4)
The result:
Node0 Node1
total 80 0
free 80 0
surplus 0 61
To fix it, adjust surplus when destroying huge pages if the node has
surplus pages in dissolve_free_hugetlb_folio().
The result with this patch:

mm/damon/core: initialize damos->walk_completed in damon_new_scheme()
The function for allocating and initialize a 'struct damos' object,
damon_new_scheme(), is not initializing damos->walk_completed field. Only
damos_walk_complete() is setting the field. Hence the field will be
eventually set and used correctly from second damos_walk() call for the
scheme. But the first damos_walk() could mistakenly not walk on the
regions. Actually, a common usage of DAMOS for taking an access pattern
snapshot is installing a monitoring-purpose DAMOS scheme, doing
damos_walk() to retrieve the snapshot, and then removing the scheme.
DAMON user-space tool (damo) also gets runtime snapshot in the way. Hence
the problem can continuously happen in such use cases. Initialize it
properly in the allocation function.

mm/damon: respect core layer filters' allowance decision on ops layer
Filtering decisions are made in filters evaluation order. Once a decision
is made by a filter, filters that scheduled to be evaluated after the
decision-made filter should just respect it. This is the intended and
documented behavior. Since core layer-handled filters are evaluated
before operations layer-handled filters, decisions made on core layer
should respected by ops layer.
In case of reject filters, the decision is respected, since core
layer-rejected regions are not passed to ops layer. But in case of allow
filters, ops layer filters don't know if the region has passed to them
because it was allowed by core filters or just because it didn't match to
any core layer. The current wrong implementation assumes it was due to
not matched by any core filters. As a reuslt, the decision is not
respected. Pass the missing information to ops layer using a new filed in
'struct damos', and make the ops layer filters respect it.

filemap: move prefaulting out of hot write path
There is a generic anti-pattern that shows up in the VFS and several
filesystems where the hot write paths touch userspace twice when they
could get away with doing it once.
Dave Chinner suggested that they should all be fixed up[1]. I agree[2].
But, the series to do that fixup spans a bunch of filesystems and a lot of
people. This patch fixes common code that absolutely everyone uses. It
has measurable performance benefits[3].
I think this patch can go in and not be held up by the others.
I will post them separately to their separate maintainers for
consideration. But, honestly, I'm not going to lose any sleep if
the maintainers don't pick those up.
There is a bit of a sordid history here. I originally wrote 998ef75ddb57 ("fs: do not prefault sys_write() user buffer pages")
to fix a performance issue that showed up on early SMAP hardware.
But that was reverted with 00a3d660cbac because it exposed an
underlying filesystem bug.
This is a reimplementation of the original commit along with some
simplification and comment improvements.
The basic problem is that the generic write path has two userspace
accesses: one to prefault the write source buffer and then another to
perform the actual write. On x86, this means an extra STAC/CLAC pair.
These are relatively expensive instructions because they function as
barriers.
Keep the prefaulting behavior but move it into the slow path that gets
run when the write did not make any progress. This avoids livelocks
that can happen when the write's source and destination target the
same folio. Contrary to the existing comments, the fault-in does not
prevent deadlocks. That's accomplished by using an "atomic" usercopy
that disables page faults.
The end result is that the generic write fast path now touches
userspace once instead of twice.

Fix race between rmmod and /proc/XXX's inode instantiation.
The bug is that pde->proc_ops don't belong to /proc, it belongs to a
module, therefore dereferencing it after /proc entry has been registered
is a bug unless use_pde/unuse_pde() pair has been used.
use_pde/unuse_pde can be avoided (2 atomic ops!) because pde->proc_ops
never changes so information necessary for inode instantiation can be
saved _before_ proc_register() in PDE itself and used later, avoiding
pde->proc_ops->... dereference.

x86/vmemmap: use direct-mapped VA instead of vmemmap-based VA
Address an Oops issues when performing test of loading XE GPU driver
module after applying the GPU SVM and Xe SVM patch series[1] and the Dept
patch series[2].
The issue occurs when loading the xe driver via modprobe [3], which adds a
struct page for device memory via devm_memremap_pages(). When a process
leads the addition of a struct page to vmemmap (e.g. hot-plug), the page
table update for the newly added vmemmap-based virtual address is updated
first in init_mm's page table and then synchronized later.
If the vmemmap-based virtual address is accessed through the process's
page table before this sync, a page fault will occur. This patch
translates vmemmap-based virtual address to direct-mapped virtual address
and use it, if the current top-level page table is not init_mm's page
table when accessing a vmemmap-based virtual address before this sync.
When a process leads the addition of a struct page to vmemmap
(e.g. hot-plug), the page table update for the newly added vmemmap-based
virtual address is updated first in init_mm's page table and then
synchronized later.
If the vmemmap-based virtual address is accessed through the process's
page table before this sync, a page fault will occur.
This translates vmemmap-based virtual address to direct-mapped virtual
address and use it, if the current top-level page table is not init_mm's

LoongArch: KVM: Fix GPA size issue about VM
Physical address space is 48 bit on Loongson-3A5000 physical machine,
however it is 47 bit for VM on Loongson-3A5000 system. Size of physical
address space of VM is the same with the size of virtual user space (a
half) of physical machine.
Variable cpu_vabits represents user address space, kernel address space
is not included (user space and kernel space are both a half of total).
Here cpu_vabits, rather than cpu_vabits - 1, is to represent the size of
guest physical address space.
Also there is strict checking about page fault GPA address, inject error
if it is larger than maximum GPA address of VM.

LoongArch: KVM: Reload guest CSR registers after sleep
On host, the HW guest CSR registers are lost after suspend and resume
operation. Since last_vcpu of boot CPU still records latest vCPU pointer
so that the guest CSR register skips to reload when boot CPU resumes and
vCPU is scheduled.
Here last_vcpu is cleared so that guest CSR registers will reload from
scheduled vCPU context after suspend and resume.

LoongArch: KVM: Add interrupt checking for AVEC
There is a newly added macro INT_AVEC with CSR ESTAT register, which is
bit 14 used for LoongArch AVEC support. AVEC interrupt status bit 14 is
supported with macro CSR_ESTAT_IS, so here replace the hard-coded value
0x1fff with macro CSR_ESTAT_IS so that the AVEC interrupt status is also
supported by KVM.

The problem is that base address allocated from hugetlbfs is not aligned
with pmd size. Here add a checking for hugetlbfs and align base address
with pmd size. After this patch the test case "testcases/bin/hugefork02"
passes to run.

LoongArch: Set max_pfn with the PFN of the last page
The current max_pfn equals to zero. In this case, it causes user cannot
get some page information through /proc filesystem such as kpagecount.
The following message is displayed by stress-ng test suite with command
"stress-ng --verbose --physpage 1 -t 1".

LoongArch: Use polling play_dead() when resuming from hibernation
When CONFIG_RANDOM_KMALLOC_CACHES or other randomization infrastructrue
enabled, the idle_task's stack may different between the booting kernel
and target kernel. So when resuming from hibernation, an ACTION_BOOT_CPU
IPI wakeup the idle instruction in arch_cpu_idle_dead() and jump to the
interrupt handler. But since the stack pointer is changed, the interrupt
handler cannot restore correct context.
So rename the current arch_cpu_idle_dead() to idle_play_dead(), make it
as the default version of play_dead(), and the new arch_cpu_idle_dead()
call play_dead() directly. For hibernation, implement an arch-specific
hibernate_resume_nonboot_cpu_disable() to use the polling version (idle
instruction is replace by nop, and irq is disabled) of play_dead(), i.e.
poll_play_dead(), to avoid IPI handler corrupting the idle_task's stack
when resuming from hibernation.
This solution is a little similar to commit 406f992e4a372dafbe3c ("x86 /
hibernate: Use hlt_play_dead() when resuming from hibernation").

LoongArch: Convert unreachable() to BUG()
When compiling on LoongArch, there exists the following objtool warning
in arch/loongarch/kernel/machine_kexec.o:
kexec_reboot() falls through to next function crash_shutdown_secondary()
Avoid using unreachable() as it can (and will in the absence of UBSAN)
generate fall-through code. Use BUG() so we get a "break BRK_BUG" trap
(with unreachable annotation).

Andy reported the following build warning from head_32.S:

virt: sev-guest: Move SNP Guest Request data pages handling under snp_cmd_mutex
Compared to the SNP Guest Request, the "Extended" version adds data pages for
receiving certificates. If not enough pages provided, the HV can report to the
VM how much is needed so the VM can reallocate and repeat.
Commit
ae596615d93d ("virt: sev-guest: Reduce the scope of SNP command mutex")
moved handling of the allocated/desired pages number out of scope of said
mutex and create a possibility for a race (multiple instances trying to
trigger Extended request in a VM) as there is just one instance of
snp_msg_desc per /dev/sev-guest and no locking other than snp_cmd_mutex.
Fix the issue by moving the data blob/size and the GHCB input struct
(snp_req_data) into snp_guest_req which is allocated on stack now and accessed
by the GHCB caller under that mutex.
Stop allocating SEV_FW_BLOB_MAX_SIZE in snp_msg_alloc() as only one of four
callers needs it. Free the received blob in get_ext_report() right after it is
copied to the userspace. Possible future users of snp_send_guest_request() are
likely to have different ideas about the buffer size anyways.

virt: sev-guest: Allocate request data dynamically
Commit
ae596615d93d ("virt: sev-guest: Reduce the scope of SNP command mutex")
narrowed the command mutex scope to snp_send_guest_request(). However,
GET_REPORT, GET_DERIVED_KEY, and GET_EXT_REPORT share the req structure in
snp_guest_dev. Without the mutex protection, concurrent requests can overwrite
each other's data. Fix it by dynamically allocating the request structure.

fs/pipe: add simpler helpers for common cases
The fix to atomically read the pipe head and tail state when not holding
the pipe mutex has caused a number of headaches due to the size change
of the involved types.
It turns out that we don't have _that_ many places that access these
fields directly and were affected, but we have more than we strictly
should have, because our low-level helper functions have been designed
to have intimate knowledge of how the pipes work.
And as a result, that random noise of direct 'pipe->head' and
'pipe->tail' accesses makes it harder to pinpoint any actual potential
problem spots remaining.
For example, we didn't have a "is the pipe full" helper function, but
instead had a "given these pipe buffer indexes and this pipe size, is
the pipe full". That's because some low-level pipe code does actually
want that much more complicated interface.
But most other places literally just want a "is the pipe full" helper,
and not having it meant that those places ended up being unnecessarily
much too aware of this all.
It would have been much better if only the very core pipe code that
cared had been the one aware of this all.
So let's fix it - better late than never. This just introduces the
trivial wrappers for "is this pipe full or empty" and to get how many
pipe buffers are used, so that instead of writing
if (pipe_full(pipe->head, pipe->tail, pipe->max_usage))
the places that literally just want to know if a pipe is full can just
say
if (pipe_is_full(pipe))
instead. The existing trivial cases were converted with a 'sed' script.
This cuts down on the places that access pipe->head and pipe->tail
directly outside of the pipe code (and core splice code) quite a lot.
The splice code in particular still revels in doing the direct low-level
accesses, and the fuse fuse_dev_splice_write() code also seems a bit
unnecessarily eager to go very low-level, but it's at least a bit better
than it used to be.

block: Name the RQF flags enum
Commit 5f89154e8e9e3445f9b59 ("block: Use enum to define RQF_x bit
indexes") converted the RQF flags to an anonymous enum, which was
a beneficial change. This patch goes one step further by naming the enum
as "rqf_flags".
This naming enables exporting these flags to BPF clients, eliminating
the need to duplicate these flags in BPF code. Instead, BPF clients can
now access the same kernel-side values through CO:RE (Compile Once, Run
Everywhere), as shown in this example:

Previously, we fixed journal resize spuriousl failing with
-BCH_ERR_open_buckets_empty, but initial journal allocation was missed
because it didn't invoke the "block on allocator" loop at all.
Factor out the "loop on allocator" code to fix that.

x86/boot: Sanitize boot params before parsing command line
The 5-level paging code parses the command line to look for the 'no5lvl'
string, and does so very early, before sanitize_boot_params() has been
called and has been given the opportunity to wipe bogus data from the
fields in boot_params that are not covered by struct setup_header, and
are therefore supposed to be initialized to zero by the bootloader.
This triggers an early boot crash when using syslinux-efi to boot a
recent kernel built with CONFIG_X86_5LEVEL=y and CONFIG_EFI_STUB=n, as
the 0xff padding that now fills the unused PE/COFF header is copied into
boot_params by the bootloader, and interpreted as the top half of the
command line pointer.
Fix this by sanitizing the boot_params before use. Note that there is no
harm in calling this more than once; subsequent invocations are able to
spot that the boot_params have already been cleaned up.

fs/pipe: fix pipe buffer index use in FUSE
This was another case that Rasmus pointed out where the direct access to
the pipe head and tail pointers broke on 32-bit configurations due to
the type changes.
As with the pipe FIONREAD case, fix it by using the appropriate helper
functions that deal with the right pipe index sizing.

fs/pipe: do not open-code pipe head/tail logic in FIONREAD
Rasmus points out that we do indeed have other cases of breakage from
the type changes that were introduced on 32-bit targets in order to read
the pipe head and tail values atomically (commit 3d252160b818: "fs/pipe:
Read pipe->{head,tail} atomically outside pipe->mutex").
Fix it up by using the proper helper functions that now deal with the
pipe buffer index types properly. This makes the code simpler and more
obvious.
The compiler does the CSE and loop hoisting of the pipe ring size
masking that we used to do manually, so open-coding this was never a
good idea.

fs/pipe: express 'pipe_empty()' in terms of 'pipe_occupancy()'
That's what 'pipe_full()' does, so it's more consistent. But more
importantly it gets the type limits right when the pipe head and tail
are no longer necessarily 'unsigned int'.
